Case study: the magnetar
Around the star 1E 1547.0−5408, the magnetic field exceeds the critical threshold of the vacuum: matter creation runs there permanently. It is the only known place in space where the spacetime weave manufactures matter before our eyes — and it leaves two measurable imprints in the light.
A field beyond the vacuum threshold
The vacuum has a magnetic threshold, twin of Schwinger's critical electric field: Bc = m²c²/eℏ = 4.4×10⁹ teslas. Below it, a photon crosses the field unharmed; above it, the field can absorb the recoil of a single photon and convert it into an electron-positron pair — playing the "third body" role that the crystal lattice plays in a semiconductor. The magnetar 1E 1547.0−5408 (2.07 s rotation, fastest of its class) carries a surface field of 3.2×10¹⁰ T:
In TQNT language this is the "critical field" regime of the nucleation postulate (P22): the entry event — a wave knotting itself into the weave's rails as a knot + mirror pair — is no longer a rare accident but a permanent regime.
The trefoil factory
The rotation sustains a natural accelerator (10¹⁵ eV per particle); the hard photons it produces materialize in the field, and each pair feeds the cascade. The throughput: about 2×10³⁵ pair creations per second — some 400 tonnes of electron-positron matter per second, each electron a trefoil knotted at 0.35 fm. During the storm of 22 January 2009 (over 200 bursts in a few hours), the trapped pair plasmas (the literature's “trapped fireballs”) created more than 10⁴⁶ pairs. The engine: the field inherited at birth — a 3×10⁴⁶ erg reservoir spent in ~10,000 years, precisely the observed active lifetime of magnetars.
The pair wall: an altimeter in the spectrum
The passage to nucleation closes the sky it opens: any photon above threshold, emitted near the surface, materializes before escaping. The full calculation yields not a soft cutoff but a wall — the transmission drops from 1 to zero as a step, exactly at the gravitationally redshifted threshold:
The observed cutoff explained
The hard X-ray tails of magnetars stop before the MeV, and no magnetar has ever been seen at MeV energies: that cutoff is the photosphere of the passage to nucleation — the absorption of light is matter creation itself.
The edge measures the altitude
The exact edge energy depends on the emission altitude (the wall evaporates around 5–6 stellar radii): measuring the edge means measuring where the star emits. Target: the COSI telescope (~2027).
Polarized light tells the splitting story
Below the pair threshold a photon can split in two (γ → γγ) — but only in one of the two polarization modes. Above ~20 keV that mode is eliminated before escaping: the outgoing flux becomes almost purely polarized in the other mode. A sharp prediction: a jump of the polarization degree near 20–30 keV, within reach of hard X-ray polarimeters (XL-Calibur). And the observed break between 300 and 700 keV is neither splitting nor pairs: it belongs to the intrinsic spectrum — the calculation assigns each spectral feature to its mechanism.
The line that weighs the star
The created matter eventually annihilates: electron and positron meet again and return their 511 keV. Emitted from the surface, the line arrives gravitationally redshifted: 511 × 0.810 = 414 keV — its position directly measures the star's mass-to-radius ratio. Too faint in quiescence, it becomes detectable during bursts: a prime target for COSI in target-of-opportunity mode.
The crushed weave: 34%, and yet G does not move
A natural question: does a star made only of neutrons, so dense, alter the weave — and therefore gravity itself — differently from ordinary mass? The answer comes in two halves, and the second is counter-intuitive.
The local alteration is colossal. At the surface of 1E 1547 the weave is depleted by 34% — compared with one part in a billion at ground level on Earth, and 3×10−39 at the edge of a nucleon. The star digs into the weave 1038 times harder than an isolated nucleon; only a black-hole horizon does better (100%). This is where the 0.810 factor used above comes from: the spectrum's two altimeters measure that crushing.
What does not change: G
The weave's response to a knot is proportional to its mass — from 10−56 m for an electron to 5×104 m for the whole star — so that the gravitational constant read off is identical in every case. This is the equivalence principle in its barest form: the weave reads a total deficit, never a species identity. Neutrons, iron or plasma: same mass, same gravity. The observational check exists: against the mass-radius relations measured by NICER, the departure from the standard calculation is 10−9 — null.
What also does not change: the thresholds
A 34% crushing shifts no local threshold: the constants do not drift, and both the critical field of the vacuum and the pair-creation threshold (1.022 MeV) are, right at the star's surface, what they are in the laboratory. The crushing acts only on the correspondence between local and observed — that is, precisely, on the two altimeters: 1.022 MeV becomes 0.827 MeV, and 511 keV becomes 414 keV.
What the neutron composition does govern is far from trivial: the crust and its thermal gradient (the battery), the fraction of degenerate electrons that decides the Pauli inversion at the passage, the surface chemistry of the created pairs. In other words: neutron matter decides everything that happens inside the star, and nothing of what the weave makes of it. The weave reads only mass.
What the magnetar will never do — the predicted absences
- No exotic particle in the bursts: Vassiliev suppression and the desert theorem forbid the passage to nucleation from creating anything but light pairs — the purely e±γ spectra of magnetars confirm it; any exotic line would refute the framework.
- No "pressure-fused" matter: even at the star's core, gravitational pressure reaches only one ten-thousandth of the flux tube's topological scale — nucleons remain individual knots. Gravity binds the star; linking binds each nucleon.
- No transmutation by twisting: twisting an electron will never turn it into another knot (White's theorem) — composite matter is born in mirror pairs, through the hadronic route.
Honesty: what is reading, what is test
All the numbers above coincide with standard quantum electrodynamics — by design: TQNT is built to be indistinguishable in these regimes; it rereads the mechanisms (passage to nucleation, rails, trefoils) without altering the rates. The falsifiable items (wall edge, polarization jump, 414 keV line, absence of exotics) test the coherence of the overall reading, not a numerical departure from QED.
